Saving money could be boring at times. Most of us would rather enjoy our money by going out or buying something nice. However, saving could be exciting by switching your mindset. Do you want to go on vacation or buy a new video game console? Those are items we should save for rather than buying or paying for them overnight. This is why using credit cards gets us into trouble.
You want to get into the habit of saving for big purchases. What are big purchases? I don’t know about a lot of people but for me it is anything over $100. Anytime a single item costs more than $100 than I think twice. We need to look at money differently and tell ourselves that certain purchases may not be worth it if we cannot afford to pay for them right away. This means that if you use credit you need to be able to pay for it immediately.
You also need to think of all the things that come up unexpectedly. The things I have seen that really impact people are things like getting new tires. The battery or alternator going out. These purchases are not cheap. These are expenses that cost a lot of money and require our attention right away. This is why we should have three to six months of savings because things do happen. You should also have separate checking and savings accounts. They should never be the same account.
