The foundation of planning for your future starts with figuring out where you are in life. You need to first see if you are starting off or are ahead. There are going to be people that maybe realize they are further than they originally thought. They might have a good amount of savings and money in 401(k) plans. There are also going to be those folks that are starting from scratch. Those individuals that need to open a savings account and start contributing to a retirement account.
Regardless of the situation you are in you need to start first by figuring out where your money is coming from and where it is going. You need to track how much of that money is going to essentials and wants. There are times when we cannot really do much about the essentials. Unfortunately, we need food and shelter to survive. You could possibly be more practical with your essentials. You may not need a big house or apartment. You could possibly get roommates to help. You could possibly switch to meat or items that are cheaper and last longer. Again, there isn’t an incredible amount of stuff you could do when it comes to the essentials.
You have a lot of power when it comes to wants though. You could always cut things that are not essential. You could instead brew your coffee at home. You can meal prep and take lunch to work. You can stick to only one streaming service. You could go out to eat less with friends or plan budget friendly vacations. You should not deprive yourself of things, and no one should ask you not to spend. However, you could do a lot of things to help yourself out. You are in control of your life and can easily figure out what is important to you. Do not allow the pressures of life to make you do things you cannot afford.
