Factors to Consider When Changing Jobs

There will come a time when you are ready to move jobs. The reason could be because you are tired of working there, the pay is too little, or you do not like the new manager. Please don’t be so quick to move on for just any offer. Consider some factors first:

  • The hourly rate for your new job could be better. However, what about the benefits. You may be leaving an employer where you accrue more vacation time. An employer that pays more for health, dental, and vision insurance. Look at the total package. Do not make the mistake of only factoring your hourly pay.
  • Is your commute going to get longer? This is something that gets lost on people. More money is great, but you should not be driving more. Are you going to get home later? Will you have to start earlier? You need to consider the time and gas you may be losing when moving to a new place.
  • Your new manager may not be great. Can you guarantee another one somewhere else will be? You have put in time at your employer. Look at other options internally before deciding to look elsewhere. The time you have built is valuable. Do not let emotions get the best of you.

The big reason you should consider leaving your current employer is because of a big promotion that opens new doors. You leaving for a supervisor or manager role makes sense. A role in management will give you new responsibilities that will look very good after a couple of years. That always makes sense.
